If you cannot name your KiwiSaver fee, you are not set-and-forget

Most people can name their bank. Far fewer can name the ongoing fee on the KiwiSaver fund that holds years of pay. That gap is not a personality flaw. The fee is taken from the fund. There is often no invoice.
This note is general education for New Zealand readers. It is not personalised financial advice and not a recommendation to join, stay with, or leave any provider.
What “fee” usually means here
For long-term KiwiSaver education, the number that matters most day to day is the ongoing annual fund management charge — a percentage of the balance, year after year. Comparison tools sometimes discuss this as part of total annual fund charges.
It is typically:
- Charged as a percentage of your balance
- Taken out of the fund rather than billed to your everyday account
- Easy to ignore because it does not feel like a bill
Why a small percentage is not small
Two people can contribute the same and sit in similar markets. If one pays a much higher ongoing percentage than the other, the gap compounds against the higher-fee saver. That is the quiet leak. It is not a forecast of anyone’s future balance.
New Zealanders as a group still pay a large sum in KiwiSaver fees each year. The useful personal habit is narrower: write down your disclosed ongoing fee and the date you checked it.
Low fees exist — you still have to find yours
Some KiwiSaver providers publish very low ongoing management charges. Others do not. The range in the market is wide. That is why a habit beats a brand name: open the official page for the fund you already hold, write the disclosed fee, and date it.
Surefire Empire does not sell KiwiSaver products and does not tell you which provider to use. Low fees do not mean a fund cannot fall. They mean less of the return is taken as cost. Always verify live figures on the provider’s own documents.
A 10-minute check
- Log in through the official provider site only.
- Write the fund name.
- Write the ongoing fee as disclosed.
- Write today’s date.
“Not sure” is an honest answer. Guessing 0.00% is not. Do not send passwords or account screenshots to Surefire Empire.
What this is not
This article does not tell you to switch funds. It does not guarantee a higher balance. It does not replace official IRD, Sorted, or provider documents.
The KiwiSaver Self-Management module walks this habit in order — fees, know what you are in, then an educational scenario guide. $127. We teach. You decide.
